Jolien Boumkwo, the champion in shot put and hammer throw from Belgium, demonstrated remarkable team spirit at the European Championships in Poland. In a selfless act, she participated in a 100-meter hurdles race outside her usual events to prevent her team from facing disqualification.
A video capturing Boumkwo’s cheerful demeanor as she navigated each hurdle went viral. She stepped in when Belgium’s two hurdlers had to withdraw due to injuries. Without her intervention, the team would have been at risk of disqualification.
Despite being outside her comfort zone, the 29-year-old tackled the hurdles with precision and finished the race in 32.81 seconds. While this was 19 seconds behind the winning time of Spanish sprinter Teresa Errandonea (13.22 seconds), Boumkwo’s effort earned her applause from the audience and congratulations from her rivals. Importantly, she secured two points for the team, a contribution that could prove crucial as the bottom three countries face relegation from Division 1 based on points.
