Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar clinched the gold medal at the MVA High-Performance athletics meet 1 in Chula Vista, USA, achieving a remarkable leap of 8.29m. This victory, in only his second event of the season, showcased the 24-year-old’s prowess, coming just 0.07m shy of his personal best of 8.36m set last year, where he secured a silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
In the competition, China’s Ma Weidong secured the silver medal with a leap of 7.99m, while Huafeng Huang, also from China, claimed the bronze with an effort of 7.61m. Although Sreeshankar’s jump exceeded the qualifying standard for the World Athletics Championships 2023 scheduled in Budapest this August (set at 8.25m), it wasn’t officially recognized due to wind conditions. The wind speed during his attempt was 3.1m/s, surpassing the permissible limit of +2 m/s.
Despite this, Sreeshankar’s recent performance adds to his consistent form, as demonstrated by his 7.94m jump at the Indian Grand Prix in Bengaluru earlier this month. Notably, Sreeshankar had held the men’s long jump national record in India with an 8.36m jump, which was later surpassed by Jeswin Aldrin’s effort of 8.42m at the second Indian Open Jumps Championships in March.
